Calling all hardcore Computer Geeks!! V.92 Modem Help!!?
I’m trying to install a Agere Win Modem. The Device manager recognizes it, but no matter what I try, it responds that there is no dial tone. It came with a driver disc(no help so far). I’ve searched for HOURS to find a driver that will work with my machine. I have a feeling that this one may come down to experience. I’m a bit of a geek myself so, yes, I’ve checked my connections etc.
Modem Specs(to the best of my knowledge):
Agere V.92 56k Data+Fax Modem Version 8.30
Lucent 1646 chipset(also referred to as Mars)
Current Driver V.8.30
PC Specs:
Dell Optiplex GX260
P4, 3.06GHz
Windows XP Pro / SP2(Updated)
I would like to be able to use the V.92 features especially MOH.
Modemsite.com claims to have drivers as a "Premium"(paid) service, but they’re the only ones I’ve found.
Ask for any details you need & I’ll try to post.
Hey Rocky, some good suggestions but still no dice. Using Hyper-terminal & a local #, it still tells me "no dial-tone" I know that there is, because all I’m doing is switching the phone cord between PCs(I disconnect from ISP each time) Searching net for "no dial tone v.92"(and similar variations)gets tons of results but none helpful. Here is a copy of the modem query log:

Filed under: How To Installing a fax modem
I checked and the driver you have (8.3) is the latest one for XP. So, what’s wrong?
1. Is the line OK? Plug the wire from your modem into a phone (not another wire into the jack) to be sure you have a dial tone.
2. Go to the Control Panel — Phone and Modems. Click the middle tab and hit the diagnostics button. You should get a report with a list of items in the left pane starting with "AT" and a list of responses in the right panel. If so, the modem is connected and working. If you get an error (port is already open’ or ‘modem does not respond’) then you have to find out what the problem is. (These particular error messages mean that another program is already using the modem and the second means the modem is not working at all.) There are many possible errors, so you’re have to look them up on the net.
3. If the modem does respond OK, then try a manual dial. Go to Start — Programs — Accessories — Communications — Hyperterminal. Put in a phone number and hit ‘OK.’ You can use any phone number at all — all you want to see is if the modem starts to do it. If it does, then the modem and the phone line are OK. If not, see what kind of error message you get and, again, do a search on the net to resolve the problem.
If you get errors you can’t figure out, re-post and we can help you.
Good Luck.
