Can you recommend a good internet fax program?
I’m in need of a basic program that will allow my computer to receive faxes sent by any typical fax machine. (I don’t really need the ability to send faxes.) And this need is going to be temporary (I’m collecting data for a short-term project) so I’m reluctant to invest big bucks in a computer program that’s designed for company offices. Is there a free download that will work? A friend of mine had an eFax Messenger download once but their service is no longer free. Can anyone recommend a freeware program, or at least an inexpensive one?
By the way, I use Windows XP on a broadband connection. I have no land line and no phone modum.

Go to http://www.download.com and search for "fax software" you should find good freeware & shareware you can use. Or alternatively look at using an internet fax service like e-fax but there are other really cheap internet fax services. Use a comparison site like http://fax2emailservices.com to find a cheap service.
If you don’t have outlook installed which has all the options available, it might sound pre-historic, but the easiest way is to install a modem and hook it up to your phone line. Make sure you turn off any answering machines or extend the number of rings before answer, but when you dial your home number, the modem will pick up the calls as faxes if you know when they’re going to be sent. Means leaving you PC/Modem on and delegating control of answering the phone over to your PC though.
After additional comments above then you’ll need an internet fax server or provider to relay your faxes to you. Try the yahoo ones…
