So it has a fax modem…does that mean I have to buy a fax machine,or can I set it up without one?

•From the link you included in your question about the specifications of your HP, it does appear that you have a fax modem installed on your computer.
However, to be able to send and receive a fax on your computer without installing any additional software depends on your operating-system. If you are using MICROSOFT VISTA ULTIMATE, a fax program comes pre-installed on that version of VISTA. I use my VISTA ULTIMATE machine to send and receive a fax all the time, and I do not even have to have it connected to a fax machine, I just plug in my regular phone lone(not a dedicated fax line) to my computer.
If you do not have a VISTA ULTIMATE machine but some other version of WINDOWS I recommend the following link: http://www.smartcomputing.com/editorial/... This article will give you a tutorial on making your computer a fax machine without subscribing to any on-line fax service.
This article is not complete in the web-version, but it gives you the basics. I happened to purchase the March, 2009 issue of SMART COMPUTING magazine and read the complete article. You may be able to purchase this back issue of SMART COMPUTING to get the full article.
I think this will be helpful to you.
