How does sending an international fax work?

I worked in the UK, and I asked my boss if he could fax me a reference. I live in the US, so should I just give him my fax number with 001 then the area code and number? The main thing I’m concerned about is if my boss will get charged for making an international call. Should I just ask him to email it to me or should I send a self-addressed envelople? Thanks
