I can’t access my. ADSL modem’s config utility?
I have DSL and a SmartChoice DSL 500. Im running XP on a laptop. I have internet access. However, I can’t access the modems configuration utility at 192.168.1.1?
The router is reset to factory settings. Why the hell can’t I access the utility? What do I do? I’m trying to install a wireless router behind it, but it’s dead when I install it. I imagine I need to do something in the config.
Any help is appreciated. If you need more info just post what and I’ll add it really quick. Thanks!

If this DSL modem has not provided your computer with a Gateway address, you are DONE. But try opening a COMMAND PROMPT and typing IPCONFIG and see if a gateway address appeared.
Then try IPCONFIG /RENEW
and see if that fixes it.
If a different gateway address appears, try that.
192.168.1.1 may not be the ip. http://www.portforward.com/routers.htm may help you to find the correct ip.
maybe that’s because you mighthave the worng one
try 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1
But to be sure go Start>run> type "cmd" without quotes press enter
then type ipconfig/all then press enter
your number should be the one after default gateway
to check that gateway is indeed 192.168.0.1, go to the ms dos prompt by typing command or cmd in the Run open field, then type ipconfig and press enter. it will give you the ip address, subnet mask, and default gateway, which is your utility. if after confirming that it is correct and you still cant open it, force your ip address by going to the LAN properties. goodluck! =)
