Why is my computer is tying up phone line even when not on internet?
I am using a 56k modem to connect to the internet since nothing else is available in my area. Recently my modem got fried in an electrical storm and I had to buy another one. I purchased an internal fax modem and installed it. Since then it seems the computer ties up the phone line when I am not on the internet. It isn’t all the time just every now and then. You don’t hear the modem talking when you pick up the phone as it does when you are on the internet, just silence. The reason I blame it on my computer is that to get my phone back I either have to disconnect the computer from the phone jack or sometimes just trying to log onto the internet will give me the use of my phone back. Anyone have any suggestions or reasons this might be happening and how to solve this problem?

some times the new modem is installed (automatically) so it turns on when the PC turns on. Look in your Start – settings- taskbar and start up menu and make sure it doesn’t turn on untill you want it to.
If it seems to happen after you’ve been on a while, check in your task manager (ctrl + alt + del ) and see if the modem is shown as on. Remember… the new modem could be bad.
